As Thanksgiving approaches next week, we have been looking back over the past year and thanking God for all of His provisions! It was exactly this time last year that we thought that we would NEVER be parents; and then, just a few days later, we found ourselves driving through the mountains to meet Hannah's birthmother. How amazing is God that He holds our future in His hands and will uphold us when we are too discouraged to even look up?
Just look back through our blog, and you can see the ups and downs we went through before the blessed day we were able to bring our beautiful daughter home! Yet, see how God provides? We can still feel the sting of Jamie losing his job just a few weeks after we were settling in as new parents, but He never abandoned us. Instead, we have never felt such love and support from our family, friends, and church. Isn't God amazing?
Even now, as we still struggle to make ends meet, we can see God providing for us every month! We haven't fallen behind on a single bill - including our mortgage! We haven't gone hungry even one day! Hannah has never been without diapers, formula, or baby food! Isn't God faithful to provide?
As we look forward to celebrating our first Thanksgiving with our beautiful daughter, we are reminded of God's greatness. As we watch our daughter sleep, we feel wrapped in His love. As we marvel at her newfound ability to crawl, we are reminded to crawl to the Lord in prayer. Looking through the eyes of our child, we feel overwhelmed with blessings and overflowing with love.
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
Love,
Jamie, Katie, and Hannah

The Finalization
We just wanted to update our blog again to let everyone know how well our court appearance went yesterday.
It was such an incredible day! We are still reeling from it all! The judge was running late, so we didn't get in for our hearing until 40 minutes later. By the time we were ready to go, we had 39 friends and family arrive to support us! The judge was overwhelmed by the number we brought with us, and we think that helped him move things along quicker in order to get everyone out! (Plus, if he denied us our adoption, he may have been afraid of the mob scene he would have to face!)
Hannah was such a good little girl through the whole thing, even though it was past her usual nap time! Her Guardian ad Litem (GAL), whom we did NOT get to choose ourselves, ended up being someone who has known Katie since she was a little girl. He actually sort of ended up testifying on our behalf, telling the judge that he knew our family well and could wholeheartedly support the placement of Hannah in our home. Isn't it amazing how God works? The GAL also didn't charge us as much as he normally does for his GAL fee!
Our attorney put Jamie on the stand first, asking him questions about his job, bonding with Hannah, knowing that we could not undo the adoption, etc. The GAL followed up with just a few questions, but the judge didn't have any. When Jamie took Hannah from Katie so Katie could take the stand, Hannah took a minute to spit up all down the front of Jamie's suit coat! Of course, it took a few minutes for the laughter to die down! Katie just had to answer some follow-up questions confirming Jamie's answers. It all took about 15 minutes.
Usually the judge takes a few minutes to deliberate over all the paperwork, but this judge was very kind and jovial and immediately signed the adoption decree! He cracked jokes during the whole process, which made us feel much more at ease. He even took a few minutes at the end to take some pictures with us! He said that the only concern he had was that we just didn't have enough support from our family and friends!=)
We are so relieved to finally know that Hannah is 100% completely ours! We love her so much, and we could not stand the thought of anyone taking her away from us!
Following the hearing, we had a celebratory lunch at a quiet restaurant. It was such a nice time to spend with people who have been praying for us and supporting us during this whole exciting process!
Going through this whole adoption process with Hannah has made us appreciate even more the amazing grace of God's adoption plan for us. Despite the fact that we are horrible sinners, God has chosen us to be His children if we want to be. While we may have sacrificed some finances and endured an emotional roller coaster ride with Hannah's adoption, we endured nothing compared to what Christ endured on the cross for us! He sacrificed His own life in order to save ours.
Our hope and prayer is that Hannah will be able to use her unique story to tell others about what God has done for her. We are a testimony to how God has provided for us above what we could ever "ask or think." He has been so faithful during this whole process and while Jamie has been without a job. We are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives, and we are so joyful to be the parents of such a gorgeous baby girl!
Thank you all for your love, prayers, and support.

Our God is So Good!
Hey, Everyone! We have been remiss in keeping everyone up-to-date on our situation, so we thought we would take some time to update our blog.
Hannah is now 20 weeks old and is growing into such a beautiful little girl! At her four-month checkup, she weighed 14 lbs. and was 24 inches long! She has started turning over, and she is now eating rice cereal and applesauce. She insists on feeding herself already, and it is so funny to watch her try to find her mouth with the spoon! She loves to play with her toys now, and she is babbling a lot. She also loves the pool and her bath, kicking and splashing the water everywhere!
We are really excited that Hannah's adoption will be finalized on August 25th. We will have to stand before the family court judge and answer any questions he might have for us, but we are pretty confident that everything will go smoothly. Our caseworker said that judges love to handle adoptions because it's a case that actually has a happy ending!
We are also pleased to announce that Jamie has finally found a job working at the local detention center as a detention officer. He begins training September 2, so we are still trying to figure out how we can pay September's bills. Katie has been writing articles, and Jamie is selling most of his Star Wars collection at a local flea market this Saturday. If you want more information about what Jamie has for sale, please let us know. We want to make sure that we sell everything!
We have been so blessed during this difficult time of Jamie not having a job. Somehow, we have not fallen behind on any bills, and we have had all of our needs provided for by family and friends. We are so thankful to all of you who have helped us out as we seek God's will for our lives! You will never know how much you have blessed us with your compassion and generosity! We know that God has promised to supply all of our needs, and He has been faithful to do so. Please continue to pray for us as we begin to pick ourselves up and start over again!

Two Month Checkup and Prayer Requests
Just a quick update to let everyone know how Hannah is growing! She had her two-month checkup on Tuesday, even though she's not technically two months old until next Tuesday. She has gained quite a bit of weight over the past couple of weeks! She is now 10 pounds, 2 ounces! She is also now 21 inches long, which is normal for newborns - NOT two-month-olds! The doctor said she appears very healthy, and he is pleased with her progress.
After much debate and prayer, we went ahead and allowed the doctor to give Hannah her first round of immunizations. We know that there has been a lot of negative information in the media lately, but we decided that the ones he was giving her this time were probably necessary. There are some immunizations that she will receive in the future that we will have to research more in depth before allowing the doctor to administer them. In fact, there are probably a few that we will reject. We will just have to see as each one comes as to what is best for Hannah. The shots were rougher for us than for Hannah, and we were pretty upset for the rest of the day! She did have a low-grade fever that night, but we gave her some Children's Tylenol (per the doctor's instructions). She slept fine through the night.
An update on Jamie's job situation is that he has had a few interviews, but the doors keep closing. We have prayed specifically that God would close doors and open the only door that He wants Jamie to go through, but we are getting really frustrated with the slow progress! We know that God will provide for us, but we are living with our finite wisdom and can't see straight right now. Please continue to pray for us and that Jamie will find a job soon.
We also wanted to mention two other families to pray for today. First, please pray for Nathan and Holly, whose foster son, Noah, is being taken from their home and placed with his grandparents. They have had Noah for several months and have become quite attached to the little guy! Second, we just want to mention the Steven Curtis Chapman family, who desperately needs our prayers since they lost their five-year-old adopted daughter in an accident at home. Also pray for their son, who was the one driving the car that hit her. Our hearts go out to these families during their difficult times.

A Rough Month
Sorry it's been so long since we've written! We have had a pretty rough month, and we are just now starting to calm down!
Hannah is growing every day. We are simply amazed with how beautiful she is! She focuses on our faces and seems to have her own personality already! We just love to stare at her all day long! She is six weeks old today, and we just can't believe how God has blessed us. She is a constant reminder of God's goodness to us!
We call this a rough month - not because of Hannah but because of the other obstacles life seems to have thrown at us! First of all, Jamie unexpectedly - and unfairly - lost his job. His boss took a disliking to him after Jamie refused to do some things that he felt were unethical. Then a misunderstanding with instructions gave his boss the perfect opportunity to force Jamie to resign. This was in no way Jamie's fault, and he is actually fighting it. However, it's been two weeks; and Employee Relations has said that because we live in an at-will state, the boss can fire you for any reason under the sun! While we are concerned that Jamie find a job quickly, we are relieved that he has been forced out of retail as it was beginning to take over our lives! We hardly ever got to spend time together as a family, and Jamie was always exhausted when he did have downtime. We believe that this is truly a blessing from God, and we are just waiting to see what He has in store for us that is much more than we could ever ask or think!
In the meantime, Katie won $500 in groceries from a radio competition - the same day that Jamie lost his job! God provided for us just hours before Jamie lost his job! Since then, we have received so many gifts and gift cards for Hannah that have made it a little easier to get by. Thankfully, Jamie's boss waited to let him go after he received his annual bonus, so we were able to pay off the adoption and have a little left over. We had also already paid this month's bills, and we are a month ahead on our mortgage. We have had several church friends and family offer us help if we need it, and we know there are a lot of people praying and looking for a job for Jamie right now.
The main thing we're concerned about right now is that if Jamie doesn't have a job by the time we stand before the judge to finalize the adoption, we could possibly have Hannah taken away from us! The earliest we would see the judge is July, and the latest is September. While we have cried and worried over this, we finally realized that we dedicated Hannah to God long before she was born - even before we knew who she was! Whatever time God gives us with Hannah is a gift, and we will praise Him for whatever He chooses to do. However, we are desperately craving everyone's prayers that His will is to allow us to keep Hannah and to raise her as our own!
While we were dealing with the blow of Jamie losing his job, we received another breath-stealing blow. Jamie's grandmother, whom we lived with at one time and were extremely close to, passed away unexpectedly. While she was 80 and had a lot of health issues, the family wasn't prepared to lose her when we did. What a blessing our church family and her church family were during this difficult time! We couldn't have asked for a better memorial service for her, which illustrated her godliness and love for her family. We are still reeling from this loss, and Jamie's grandfather is taking it extremely hard. He already had dementia, but losing his wife of 62 years has seemed to push him even farther away from us. Please especially pray for Jamie's mom as she is dealing with the loss of her mother but also having to deal with an irrational father (who lives with her and Jamie's dad).
Katie's first mother's day was very special. She received a homemade card from Hannah's birthmother wishing her a Happy Mother's Day! We realize that making that card must have been very difficult for her, and we appreciate her showing us that she respects Katie as Hannah's mother. Katie was very excited to take Hannah to her first Mother/Daughter brunch at Katie's parent's church on Saturday. The message, appropriately, was on the story of Hannah in the Bible (which is how we chose Hannah's name). On Mother's Day, we were able to spend time with both of our moms, which was extremely special for Katie on her first Mother's Day!
Besides having some gas issues, Hannah is a pretty content little girl. We feel so blessed to have her in our lives! Check out the new pictures of her, courteous of Kimberly Herron! Thanks for all your prayers and support!

She's Finally Ours!
We just wanted to send everyone a quick update on our beautiful daughter, Hannah Kathryn.
Hannah was born on April 1 (appropriate since she has been "fooling" us all along!) at 5:40 p.m. She was 6 lbs. 10 oz. and 18 1/2 inches long. She is absolutely gorgeous, as you can see from her pictures!
We were called on Tuesday, April 1, by our attorney to let us know that Hannah was being induced. However, we had to wait until Wednesday to drive to the hospital because the prison told us if we were found anywhere on the premises, we would be escorted off and could cause problems with the adoption. It was hard waiting, but I think God worked it out so that we had time to pack everything we needed and to finish out some things at both of our jobs. Of course, Katie will not be returning to her job as she will now have the blessing of being a stay-at-home mom! Jamie also had some things to figure out as his assistant manager's wife was also being induced about the same time! God has perfect timing, though, and made our trip a lot easier.
We arrived in town on Wednesday but were still unable to go to the hospital until Hannah's birthmom had been taken back to prison. We decided to settle into a hotel room and wait for the call because we were just plain exhausted! It was only a couple hours later when the hospital called to tell us we could finally meet our bouncing bundle of joy! When we arrived at the hospital, the nursing staff was so kind to us and actually set up an unused nursery room for us to have some privacy with our new daughter. They told us we could stay all night if we wanted to, but we left after 11 p.m. so we could get some sleep. Don't worry - we were back first thing in the morning!
On Thursday, we arrived to meet with the nurse practitioner, who had waited for us to do Hannah's final exam. The nursing staff showed us how to properly care for her umbilical cord, change her diaper, and feed her. They were such a Godsend! They gave us a large diaper bag full of supplies and sent us on our way with our newborn an hour later. It was so easy taking her home from the hospital after all we went through to get her, that we were unsure if we were really supposed to be taking her home!
Since we have to wait for our interstate paperwork to be completed before going home, we were just going to return to the hotel with Hannah in tow. But Katie's wonderful aunt and uncle offered us a place to stay for the night, and some friends of the family donated a timeshare to us for the remainder of our stay!
We are going to be able to go home this weekend after such a long week spent away from our family and friends. We can't wait for everybody to meet her, but it has been a good time for us to grow together as a family and to try to get Hannah on a schedule (that she doesn't always follow!) We are a little sleep-deprived, but we are so happy and content that we don't really mind!
We have an appointment to visit the BM in prison this weekend (although Hannah probably won't be going with us), so we are looking forward to being able to reassure her that all is well and that things are progressing as they should. We have reports from our attorney that she was sad about having to let her daughter go, but she is really at peace with her decision and glad that she was able to choose us as her daughter's forever family.
We are still working on paying off the adoption expenses and are going to have to rework our budget as Katie stays at home, but God has been so good to provide for us in so many ways that we know He will provide in this area as well.
We thank you all for your prayers and support during this rollercoaster ride! We are so in love with our little girl and can't wait to bring her home!

God is Still in Control
Here's just a quick update on our baby situation, since everyone has been asking if there has been any news.
We met with our attorney yesterday, and he said that the prison has determined that to even hint at a due date would be a breach of security since they don't know who we are, and we could have our attorney and our birthmom's attorney fooled! Of course, they didn't have any trouble giving us information before, so we're not really sure why they have suddenly decided to tighten security measures.
Basically, the prison doesn't care about us, the birthmom, or the baby. Our attorney said that they pretty much just look to make sure she's still alive and that the baby is still alive. He was going to send the other attorney to the prison to see if he could access the medical records (since we have a signed medical release on file). He's going to let us know if he is successful, but he said not to expect too much to come from it since the prison can pretty much do whatever they want (our tax dollars hard at work).
Because we are dealing with Medicare, we probably won't be able to receive any more ultrasounds because they don't want to waste money printing them out. We're not so much concerned about this as long as we know the baby is doing okay. She is also not going to be induced because of her prison situation. Our attorney just found out that the baby's lungs haven't fully developed yet, so we really don't want to have the baby induced. We want to protect our baby as long as possible. Since the baby has not reached full birthweight and the lungs are under-developed, it appears that the April 13th due date is probably a more accurate guess.
Our attorney gave us the option of terminating this adoption if we felt like it was getting to be too much for us, but we don't feel as though that is even an option for us. We know this is our baby, and we want to see what God has in store. We know that He has a reason for allowing us to go through this, and we want to allow Him to complete His perfect work in us. The baby will have to come eventually, so we are just trying to be patient and to not lose sight of our goal.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support!
